We are seeking a state correspondent to join our team to lead coverage of New South Wales news for Guardian Australia’s state and national news.
In this role you will….
- Lead coverage of the New South Wales news agenda for Guardian Australia’s state and national audiences by breaking exclusives, writing features and analysis on topics including, but not limited to, state politics
- Pursue complex stories in consultation with editors, through multiple sources, using different channels of investigation
- Liaise with senior editors on story ideas/choices, coverage, planning and execute priorities as directed by the newsdesk
- Nurture contacts, including in specialist areas
- Collaborate with and work as part of a team with the NSW state political reporter, and other general and specialist reporters
- Cover stories in innovative ways including through podcasts, social media, liveblogs, video and interactive reports
- Engage with social media to promote stories and uncover information
You’ll bring…
- Demonstrated experience in initiating and breaking impactful New South Wales news stories, investigations and features to deadline
- A track record in leading coverage of New South Wales stories, including politics and broader issues
- The ability to work in a fast-paced environment whilst managing multiple tasks, ideally for a news website
- Experience working with editors on planning coverage
- A strong news sense, along with a highly developed understanding of media law
- Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
- The ability to think of and develop fresh ideas and new angles
- A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values

This role is being offered on a full-time, permanent basis, with occasional weekend work, early starts or late finishes.
