About the team
Train Drivers are part of the Sydney Trains Crew Service Experience team. Our team provides safe, reliable, and efficient customer rail services across the Sydney metropolitan area.
More than 1.3 million customers travel across our Sydney Trains network every day. In the last five years, customer journeys have increased by 30 per cent and are expected to keep growing at five per cent per year, with a potential two million customer journeys on weekdays by 2026 and an anticipated increase of two million more people living in NSW by 2031.
We’re preparing for the future by employing more crew across our team, adding 41 new trains to our fleet, implementing new technology, and continuing to integrate with the Sydney Metro network.

With customer demand for our train services continuing to rise, we’re looking for the next generation of Train Drivers to deliver safe and fast travel for our customers now and into the future.
Our one-year paid Trainee Train Driver program will help you develop skills and capabilities to become a fully-fledged Train Driver. You’ll learn how to safely operate a train and manage a variety of work scenarios through a combination of on-the-job and classroom/train simulation training. You’ll also receive ongoing mentoring and support from your dedicated Driver Trainer and experienced team members and get to know other trainees in your training school cohort.
While the path to becoming a Train Driver is dynamic and rewarding, our Trainee program also reflects the work conditions and personal commitment it takes to help Sydney Trains run its network 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Your training schedule will include early mornings, evenings, and weekends. You’ll need to be willing to take on extra study outside of your training schedule to prepare for ongoing assessments.

About you
We’re looking for candidates keen to learn the ropes of becoming a Train Driver who are prepared to commit to a demanding training schedule and further study to achieve program learning outcomes.
People without prior experience are welcome to apply.
Essential requirements
To be eligible to apply, you must be:
- An Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- At least 18 years of age.
**If you are a current Sydney Trains or NSW Trains Guard, please apply through the internal guard to driver process. It is highly recommended that you have a minimum of 6 months operational experience as a qualified train guard. **
